    Effect of feeding lactating ewes with <i>Moringa oleifera</i> leaf extract on milk yield, milk composition and preweaning performance of ewe/lamb pair

    The objective this study was to evaluate the effect of different doses of Moringa oleifera leaf extract (MOE) on milk production and milk composition in ewes and on preweaning performance of their lambs. Twenty-four lactating ewes were housed individually with their lambs and assigned to four groups in a completely randomized design. The treatments included a basal diet without MOE (MOE0) or a basal diet supplemented with either 20 mL MOE per ewe per day (MOE20), 40 mL MOE per ewe per day (MOE40) or 60 mL MOE per ewe per day (MOE60). Over 45 days, milk production was recorded weekly and individual milk samples were collected for chemical analysis. Milk yield, fat-corrected milk and daily yields were similar among the four treatments. The supply of MOE did not affect ewe weaning efficiency and average daily gain or litter weaning weight of the lambs. Overall, the results from this study showed that dietary supplementation of hydroalcoholic extracts of Moringa oleifera leaves at doses of 20, 40 or 60 mL/ewes/d in lactating ewes does not have negative effects on milk yield, milk composition or lamb performance

    El presente trabajo de investigación determinó el efecto de la temperatura estable y oscilante del agua de mar a tres diferentes niveles (21, 24 y 28°C), sobre la condición fisiológica de la almeja mano de león Nodipecten subnodosus. Para ello, se evaluaron los siguientes indicadores fisiológicos: contenido de adenosina trifosfato (ATP), glucógeno y carbohidratos totales, así como índice de rendimiento muscular (IRM) y carga energética adenilada (CEA), los cuales se determinaron en el músculo abductor de organismos extraídos directamente de la laguna y después de la aplicación de los tratamientos. Se encontró que, en el experimento, las concentraciones de ATP, contenido de glucógeno, carbohidratos totales, e IRM disminuyeron significantemente (P&lt;0.05) después de la aplicación de los tratamientos. No se encontró un efecto del nivel de temperatura y la forma de aplicación (oscilante y constante) en el IRM y CEA, sin embargo, en el contenido de glucógeno se obtuvo un afecto significativo solo del nivel de temperatura, siendo los organismos sometidos a 28°C diferentes (P&lt;0.05) a los de 24 y 21°C. Por lo tanto, se concluyó, que solo el nivel de temperatura de aclimatación afectó la condición fisiológica de la almeja mano de león, siendo los organismos aclimatados a 28°C los más afectados.ABSTRACTThe present research work determined the effect of the stable and oscillating seawater temperature at three different levels (21, 24 and 28°C), on the physiological condition of the lion’s paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus. For this, we evaluated the following physiological indicators: adenosine triphosphate content (ATP), glycogen and total carbohydrates, as well as muscle yield index (MYI) and adenylated energy charge, which were determined in the abductor muscle of organisms, extracted directly from the lagoon and after the treatments application. It was found that in the experiment, concentrations of ATP, glycogen content, total carbohydrates, and MYI decreased significantly (P&lt;0.05) after the application of treatments. No effect of temperature level and application form (oscillating and constant) on MYI and CEA was found, however, glycogen content showed a significant affect only from the temperature level, being organisms exposed to 28°C statistically different from those of 24 and 21°C. In conclusion, only the acclimatization temperature level affected the physiological condition of the lion’s paw scallop, being the organisms acclimatized to 28°C the most affected

Desde esta perspectiva, la producción sustentable y el crecimiento de largo plazo pueden ser explicados por la capacidad que tienen las economías para generar e incorporar conocimientos y tecnologías.     Measurement of the cosmic ray spectrum above 4×10184{\times}10^{18} eV using inclined events detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory

    A measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum for energies exceeding 4×10184{\times}10^{18} eV is presented, which is based on the analysis of showers with zenith angles greater than 6060^{\circ} detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013. The measured spectrum confirms a flux suppression at the highest energies. Above 5.3×10185.3{\times}10^{18} eV, the "ankle", the flux can be described by a power law EγE^{-\gamma} with index γ=2.70±0.02(stat)±0.1(sys)\gamma=2.70 \pm 0.02 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.1\,\text{(sys)} followed by a smooth suppression region. For the energy (EsE_\text{s}) at which the spectral flux has fallen to one-half of its extrapolated value in the absence of suppression, we find Es=(5.12±0.25(stat)1.2+1.0(sys))×1019E_\text{s}=(5.12\pm0.25\,\text{(stat)}^{+1.0}_{-1.2}\,\text{(sys)}){\times}10^{19} eV.Comment: Replaced with published version.     Energy Estimation of Cosmic Rays with the Engineering Radio Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory

    The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) is part of the Pierre Auger Observatory and is used to detect the radio emission of cosmic-ray air showers. These observations are compared to the data of the surface detector stations of the Observatory, which provide well-calibrated information on the cosmic-ray energies and arrival directions. The response of the radio stations in the 30 to 80 MHz regime has been thoroughly calibrated to enable the reconstruction of the incoming electric field. For the latter, the energy deposit per area is determined from the radio pulses at each observer position and is interpolated using a two-dimensional function that takes into account signal asymmetries due to interference between the geomagnetic and charge-excess emission components. The spatial integral over the signal distribution gives a direct measurement of the energy transferred from the primary cosmic ray into radio emission in the AERA frequency range. We measure 15.8 MeV of radiation energy for a 1 EeV air shower arriving perpendicularly to the geomagnetic field. This radiation energy -- corrected for geometrical effects -- is used as a cosmic-ray energy estimator. Performing an absolute energy calibration against the surface-detector information, we observe that this radio-energy estimator scales quadratically with the cosmic-ray energy as expected for coherent emission. We find an energy resolution of the radio reconstruction of 22% for the data set and 17% for a high-quality subset containing only events with at least five radio stations with signal.Comment: Replaced with published version.     Measurement of the Radiation Energy in the Radio Signal of Extensive Air Showers as a Universal Estimator of Cosmic-Ray Energy

    We measure the energy emitted by extensive air showers in the form of radio emission in the frequency range from 30 to 80 MHz. Exploiting the accurate energy scale of the Pierre Auger Observatory, we obtain a radiation energy of 15.8 \pm 0.7 (stat) \pm 6.7 (sys) MeV for cosmic rays with an energy of 1 EeV arriving perpendicularly to a geomagnetic field of 0.24 G, scaling quadratically with the cosmic-ray energy. A comparison with predictions from state-of-the-art first-principle calculations shows agreement with our measurement. The radiation energy provides direct access to the calorimetric energy in the electromagnetic cascade of extensive air showers. Comparison with our result thus allows the direct calibration of any cosmic-ray radio detector against the well-established energy scale of the Pierre Auger Observatory.Comment: Replaced with published version.     Jurisdictional frontiers were created, contested, and negotiated among a wide range of actors, including native Americans and Europeans, with reference to the cities founded in Castilla del Oro (roughly present-day Panama). This research deals, first, with the reshaping of the concept of a city in the New World, based on its inhabitants' sense of civitas. It analyses, secondly, the creation and redefinition of jurisdiction during political conflicts and, third, the construction and maintenance of jurisdiction through local relations with indigenous populations described as "conversation". The analysis of the creation and preservation of local jurisdictions allows for an interpretation of the complexities involved in the configuration of political power and political space from below in the territories claimed by the Spanish Monarchy.Art Empir
